Wednesday May 18, 2022
Wednesday May 18, 2022
The writer of Hebrews advances the teaching that the Lord Jesus Christ is our Great High Priest. He moves swifly in chapter five to present the qualifcations of Jesus as the Great High Priest because he knows that merely declaring this would not satisfy his readers - they would require proof.
"And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him, called by God as High Priest “according to the order of Melchizedek,” Hebrews 5:9-10
A sermon from Hebrews 5:1–10.

Wednesday May 11, 2022
Wednesday May 11, 2022
Is the God of the Old Testament a violent or bloody God? Is He different from the God of the New Testament? This sermon looks at these questions in the context of the zeal of Phinehas in Numbers 25.
"Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 'Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned back My wrath from the children of Israel, because he was zealous with My zeal among them, so that I did not consume the children of Israel in My zeal." Numbers 25:10-11

At certain points throghout his gospel, Matthew emphasizes the return of Christ. He gives us clues to watch for and outlines the hope that we look forward to.
"Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. Let Us Hold Fast to Our Confession
Wednesday Apr 20, 2022
Wednesday Apr 20, 2022
Fidelity to commitment appears to be something of a rarity today. We are not always moved to keep our word. Especially in marriage. Unwavering commitment to a person, promise, cause, or legitimate position formerly held, is not in our best interest. We want the freedom to be able to break our word. However, the call of God to the Christian is fundamentally a call to whole-hearted commitment.
"Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin." Hebrews 4:14-15
A sermon from Hebrews 4:14–15.

Darkness, Rented Veil, and Opened Graves
Wednesday Apr 13, 2022
Wednesday Apr 13, 2022
We have a tendency to miss signals, often by accident. But there are signals of transcendence that we should be careful not to miss. Signals from God. As Good Friday approaches, we consider those listed in Matthew’s gospel as he writes about events leading up the cross:
"Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many."
A sermon from Matthew 27:35–54.

Sharper than a Two-Edged Sword
Wednesday Apr 06, 2022
Wednesday Apr 06, 2022
We are often ambivalent towards words. To some they are considered inconsequential. Others consider words almost tyrannical, and they set out to decontruct the imperialism of the logos, or the word. Whatever our views, we cannot merely discount words as inconsequential or of no value. Words are powerful, especially the word of God.
"For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." Hebrews 4:12
A sermon from Hebrews 4:1–13.

These Unshakeable Realities: Consolation in Christ
Wednesday Mar 30, 2022
Wednesday Mar 30, 2022
Often we cannot bear the harsh realities of life. But there are other unshakeable realities that we must consider. In Philippians 2, Paul lists four: Consolation in Christ, comfort of love, fellowship of the Spirit, affection and mercy. He encourages the Philippians to live in unity with these four realities as motivation.
"Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind." Phil 2:1-2
This sermon is from Philippians 1:27–2:4.

A Rest for the People of God
Wednesday Mar 16, 2022
Wednesday Mar 16, 2022
In Hebrews chapter 4, the writer focuses on the motif of rest. He brings a message of assurance; an encouragement in order that the reader will persevere in the Christian life.
"There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his. Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience." Hebrews 4:9-11
This sermon is from Hebrews 4:1–11.
